Three Florida Philanthropy Leaders Join Florida Philanthropic Network Board

(Winter Park, FL - March 3, 2010)  Three leaders in Florida's philanthropy field have joined the board of directors of Florida Philanthropic Network, a statewide association of grantmakers.  At its meeting on February 10, 2010, FPN's board of directors elected Katie Scanlan, Ian Smith and Susan Towler to three-year terms on the board.

“We are pleased to welcome these three leaders of Florida foundations and grantmaking organizations to the board of Florida Philanthropic Network,” said Jane Curran, chair of FPN's board of directors and executive director of The Florida Bar Foundation.  “They all bring valuable perspectives and experiences to help guide FPN as we work to build philanthropy to build a better Florida.”

Katie Scanlan is Senior Vice President and Southeast Region Executive for Corporate Social Responsibility at Bank of America, based in Tampa.  A 21-year veteran of Bank of America, she is responsible for all philanthropic, sponsorship and civic activities in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.  Scanlan has held various management positions during her tenure including Florida Community Relations Manager, Florida Sponsorship Marketing Manager and Florida Public Relations Manager.  She is currently a board member for Communities in Schools of Florida and a member of Leadership Florida's Class 28.

Ian Smith is Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer for the Helios Education Foundation, where he provides strategic brand, marketing and public relations leadership to the foundation.  As the most senior-level representative for Helios in Florida, Smith manages the foundation's Tampa office and is responsible for its statewide community relations.  He is a member of Leadership Florida's Class 28.

Susan Towler is Executive Director of Community Affairs for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida and Vice President of The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida, where she is responsible for the company's community investment programming and philanthropy.  She joined the company in April 1996, and was formerly Public Relations Director for the company.  Towler is currently a board member for the Jacksonville Community Council Inc. and is a member of the Women's Giving Alliance.  She is a graduate of Leadership Florida and currently serves on its regional council.  In 2008, Towler was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist to a three-year term on the Governor's Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.
