Florida's Largest Foundations
A Survey of Large Private Independent and Community Foundations
January 2009
This FPN research update provides the latest data on Florida's 258 largest foundations, which held combined assets of more than $15
billion at the end of 2006 (the most recent year for which complete data are available). Among the report's key findings:
>
Florida's 258 largest private foundations represent just
7% of all such foundations in the state but hold 78% of the
state's foundation assets.
>
Slightly more than half - 54% - of Florida's largest
foundations are located in southeast Florida, followed by
central Florida (20%).
>
Florida's large private foundations are relatively
young, with more than half - 53% - formed just since 1990.
>
In part because of the relatively young age of
Florida's foundations, the state's foundation assets per
capita lag behind the nation's other three largest states
(New York, California and Texas) as well as two southern
states (Georgia and North Carolina).
>
About $3 of every $5 in grants awarded by Florida's
largest foundations go to nonprofit organizations based in
Florida.
The research update includes rankings of Florida's largest private foundations by region, in terms of both assets and grants paid, rankings of the state's largest community foundations, and other details of the grantmaking patterns of these foundations.
