Building Philanthropy to Build a Better Florida

Community Foundations of Florida

Community Foundations of Florida is a member network of Florida Philanthropic Network, a statewide association of grantmakers dedicated to building philanthropy to build a better Florida.

Florida's community foundations connect people who care with causes that matter to make a difference in their communities.

Each Florida community foundation offers a simple, powerful and highly personal approach to charitable giving. Across the state, donors and their professional advisors - attorneys, accountants, financial planners, insurance agents, and others - choose to work with their local community foundation to meet their charitable goals while gaining maximum tax advantage for their giving.

Community Foundations of Florida represents 28 community foundations working together to promote philanthropy in our neighborhoods and throughout Florida. These foundations hold more than $1.78 billion in charitable assets and give $155 million each year to support the vital work of nonprofits in our communities. Each Florida community foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization created by and for the people of a particular area. We are here to help donors make a positive impact on their community, now... and forever.

Community foundations provide a simple, powerful, and highly personal approach to giving through:
  • Personalized service. Florida's community foundations make giving easy, flexible, and effective, accepting a wide variety of gifts, including cash, stocks, property, bequests, and more. Donors can leave personal legacies by establishing a charitable fund in their name or the name of a loved one, and they can be personally involved in recommending the uses of their gift.
  • Local expertise. Our professional staff has an in-depth understanding of the issues, opportunities, and resources that shape your community. We can help donors learn more about the agencies and programs that impact the areas they care about most.
  • Community leadership. We invest in the long term and bring people and organizations together, convening diverse voices to address local issues and needs. Our business is community building.

Community Foundation Spark Session: Family Philanthropy Services: Making the Case, Measuring the Impact

An increasing number of community foundations provide services that actively involve multiple generations or family branches in giving, granting, learning, investing, and/or volunteering together. They’re answering rising demands from donors and positioning themselves against competitors. Offering these family philanthropy services requires investments in staff capacity, organizational culture, marketing, and more. How have community foundations made the internal case for those investments? How have they made the case to professional advisors and other partners? And, how are they measuring progress and success?

FPN's family foundation members can participate in this webinar free of charge as a benefit of FPN membership. Community foundations that are NCFP subscribers are eligible to RSVP. If you are not a current partner subscriber, please contact community@ncfp.org for subscription information.

Transfer of Wealth

Transfer of Wealth (TOW) is the process whereby one generation transfers their assets to the next generation. This typically occurs at the time of death and represents the moment when legacy giveback is the greatest. TOW most likely represents the single largest under‐developed financial resource available to communities to support their development.
