Florida Power and Light assists in water storage in response to local state of emergency due to blue-green algae

In an effort reduce the flow of water from Lake Okeechobee the district says Florida Power and Light will temporarily store approximately 2.2 billion gallons per month in the cooling pond at the FPL Martin Clean Energy Center near Indiantown.

Storage began Tuesday and will continue for approximately three to four months, the district said.

"On behalf of our Governing Board, I would like to thank FPL for responding so quickly to this water storage request after the governor's declaration of emergency," SFWMD Governing Board Chairman Daniel O'Keefe said in a statement.

Pinellas education news: Grant to help healthy eating project

The Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg awarded Pinellas County Schools a $345,553 grant that will go toward the district's Healthy Schools for Healthy Children project. It was one of 19 local grants totaling about $4 million awarded last month by the foundation. Through its Healthy Schools for Healthy Children project, the district will work to change health behaviors by educating students about the benefits of staying active and eating healthy foods. The foundation draws from a $170 million endowment set up with the proceeds from the sale of not-for-profit Bayfront Medical Center to a for-profit hospital chain in 2013. The money is used to continue Bayfront's mission long-term.

Those are just a few samples of dream projects that will soon be underway, thanks to $3.9 million in grants from the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg to 19 local organizations.

Organizations collaborate to stock food pantry shelves for summer

Community Foundation of Collier County, Naples Daily News, United Way of Collier County and the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation are partnering to help stock the shelves of Collier County food pantries for the lean days of summer. Bring non-perishable food items to the newspaper's themed events each Friday through June 3 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
