Grants turn profits from Bayfront hospital sale into projects that encourage healthy living

Today, in its inaugural grant announcement, Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg awarded $4 million to community groups working to improve public health. The 19 recipients included the Pinellas County school district, the St. Petersburg Free Clinic, Mount Zion Human Services and the USF Research Foundation.

CEO Randy Russell said he was "delighted, honored and privileged" to engage the foundation's new "grant-funded partners."

"Transformation is not only possible," he said. "It's imminent."

Pines of Sarasota's caregiving institute extends its reach

The Pines of Sarasota, a nonprofit elder care center, launched its Education Institute as a way to share what its own staff members have learned -- and are continually learning -- about the daily challenges of dealing with frailty and dementia. Also part of its mission is creating a revenue stream that helps underwrite services for those who cannot afford them. Director JoAnn Westbrook is also excited about a recent grant from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County that allowed the institute to distribute five training videos each to 24 area agencies, including public libraries, hospitals, universities and service organizations like the Friendship Centers and Neuro Challenge Foundation.

Sarasota launches innovative approach to mental illness and criminal justice

Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Gulf Coast Community Foundation and Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation alongside Sarasota city and county government fund Comprehensive Treatment Court, a pilot program to divert low-level, non-violent offenders with mental illness from the county jail and providing them with services and treatment.
