Some activities of Publix's charitable wing over the last few months illustrate this mindset: $5 million to the anti-hunger campaign Feeding America, which doles out donations to local food banks; $9.5 million to Habitat for Humanity to build 100 new homes for the poor; $250,000 to the One Orlando organization to aid survivors of the Pulse nightclub massacre; $1 million to the American Red Cross to support recovery efforts following Hurricane Matthew; $85,000 to the United Way in Escambia County to support its Reading Pals program, a specific interest of Carol Jenkins Barnett, president of Publix Super Markets Charities and Mr. George's daughter.
