Funding expands literacy program

August 15, 2017

Parents of Sarasota County first-graders with reading difficulties will likely see a dramatic improvement in their students’ skills this year. That’s because Reading Recovery, the internationally renowned remedial literacy program, is now available in all of the district’s 23 elementary schools.

Reading Recovery was introduced locally in 2015, in three low-income Title 1 schools with financial assistance from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation and the Sarasota County School Board. That partnership was expanded to all 10 of the county’s Title 1 elementary schools in 2016-17.
