Building Philanthropy for a Better Florida

McGriff, Humphreys-Beher recognized for philanthropy

November 02, 2017

The Community Foundation of North Central Florida presented its annual Legacy Award on Thursday to Perry McGriff, an insurance agent who made his mark early as an athlete but was remembered for his broad philanthropic and civic contributions to Gainesville.

McGriff, who died Feb. 2, served on more than a dozen local government and civic boards, including the board of the Cade Museum, where the Legacy Award luncheon was held. In 1970, he was the youngest person ever to serve as mayor of Gainesville. He was later elected to the Alachua County Commission and the state House of Representatives.
