As you know, the Coulter Foundation has been the largest funder of civic engagement nationally for the Asian American Pacific Islander communities. In what seems like a lifetime ago Coulter funded the production of a groundbreaking film series in partnership with PBS, called “Asian Americans” that is scheduled to premiere May 11 and 12 on your local PBS channels and live streamed as well. At the time we could not have envisioned that the month right before the premiere, we would be dealing with COVID 19.
In every tragedy, there is always a scapegoat and unfortunately, the COVID-19 catastrophe has caused a huge increase in Chinese/Asian hate crimes. As a result, it was imperative to bring together a panel of distinguished speakers in a Digital Town Hall on April 30, to address the threats and challenges to the Asian American community anti-Asian sentiment expressed in this escalation of hate crimes.
Then, on May 11 and 12, PBS will live stream and televise the docuseries “Asian Americans” through their affiliate stations in all 50 states.
In the current climate, it is even more important to make visible this historical and comprehensive PBS documentary of who and what is an Asian American. Prior to this series, Asian American documentaries were based on an ethnic focus, the Chinese Exclusion Act, the Japanese Incarceration, the Vietnam War. Our new groundbreaking docuseries reviews the uniqueness of this innovative and inclusive Asian American community of different races and nationalities, different religions, and different cultures.
Please join us for these two events, and help spread the word to your colleagues, friends, social and business networks, both about the April 30 Facebook Live Town Hall and the May 11 and 12 PBS docuseries.
