Middle school students to get extra help as officials brainstorm ways to prevent shootings

Each of those schools will add two staffers to focus on academic improvement and mentoring for students with the lowest grades on their campuses. Administrators say the plan was being discussed before the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shootings in February, although the incident gives the plan a special urgency, said Linda Carter, chief executive officer of the Community Foundation of Broward, which is providing $3 million toward the project.
