Season of Sharing revived for coronavirus crisis

March 19, 2020

In an initial response to the coronavirus pandemic sweeping through the country and threatening to strain many households economically, a trusted safety net has been revived to help those most vulnerable.

Season of Sharing — a partnership between the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, the Herald-Tribune Media Group and other non-profit agencies — is poised to help local individuals and families with immediate needs such as utilities, child care and rent payments, a gesture comparable to what takes place each holiday season.

The Patterson Foundation of Sarasota has committed up to $1 million to bolster the Season of Sharing funds. The commitment includes an immediate $500,000 contribution, along with an additional dollar-for-dollar match that will go up to $500,000. If the community contributes $500,000, that would mean $1.5 million would be available for people in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties most affected by the fallout of the virus.
