Education Affinity Group
Supporting education issues, organizations and needs in Florida
Florida Philanthropic Network's Education Affinity Group (EAG) is comprised of FPN members who share an interest in supporting education issues, organizations and needs in Florida. EAG offers Florida's education funders a space to learn from each other, work together to improve the state's education outcomes and be a voice for Florida philanthropy on key education policy issues.
EAG Guiding Statement
The EAG will support a culture of high expectations for all students, in and out of school, from early childhood to postsecondary education, leading to career success.
Meet the EAG Chair, Daryl Houston
In June 2016, FPN announced Daryl Houston as the new Education Affinity Group (EAG) Chair. Daryl is a community investment officer for the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, where he manages a diverse portfolio of grants and the foundation's field of interest funds. Daryl also provides training and oversight of the foundation's Resource Library and a number of other initiatives.
Prior to coming aboard the community foundation, Daryl spent several years with United Way of Palm Beach County, where he served in the capacities of Director of Hands On Palm Beach County and Senior Director of Volunteer Center and Disaster Management. As the Senior Director, he provided oversight of the Volunteer Center’s staff, and the day-to-day operations of its programmatic services.
Daryl currently serves on the board of the Emergency Food Shelter Program (Board Chair), Allegany Franciscan Ministries Grants Committee and the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center’s Green School Recognition Program. He has spent the last 15 years working in the nonprofit sector of Palm Beach County.
ENGAGE is a toolkit designed for education funders throughout Florida to better understand Florida Standards implementation and discover new ways to support implementation in their grantmaking. The toolkit is broken up into five modules: EAG background, the current situation, needs at the district level, philanthropy’s role and examples of effective district partnerships.
The work of FPN's Education Affinity Group is supported in part through the generosity of The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Helios Education Foundation.
This position paper details the support of Florida Philanthropic Network, through our Education Funders Affinity Group, for establishing a statewide goal to have 60% of working-age Floridians possess post-secondary degrees or certifications by the year 2025. The paper also outlines FPN's support for related policies that can help achieve this goal.
The PYC Satori Foundation has received a $100,000 donation from the Community Foundation of Northwest Florida Inc. The nonprofit Satori Foundation encourages and promotes interest in sailing and yachting, and develops educational and training programs for the two sports.
