Jacksonville To Provide Better, More Out-Of-School Programming

The city of Jacksonville is revamping its after school and summer camp options after a two-year study.

Jacksonville education and business groups, including the city, Duval County Public Schools, the Jacksonville Public Education Fund, The Community Foundation of Northeast Florida, JAX Chamber, the Jacksonville Children’s Commission and many youth foundations, have formed a coalition called “Jax Shines” to take on the task of improving the offerings.

Community foundation awards county more than $90K in grants

Barnabas: In counseling progam, Nassau women recover from trauma, support each other along ...

Barnabas’s Women’s Health Initiative Nassau, or WHIN, program is designed for women in crisis in Nassau County. Funded by a $110,000 grant from the Jacksonville-based Women’s Giving Alliance, the mental-health program began in January and has helped 85 women since, according to Barnabas.

The alliance, an initiative of The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, was “delighted to partner with Barnabas to provide critical mental health services in Nassau County,” said Jan Healy, grants leadership team co-chairwoman.

Northeast Florida 'generous' with philanthropy

In 2015 individuals in Northeast Florida donated about $962 million to charitable organizations, giving more money and a higher percentage of their incomes than other donors across the state, according to a national fundraising consultant. 

The median contribution from donors in Duval, Baker, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns counties was $3,970, compared with $3,346 statewide. The percentage of income given was 4.08 in the five metropolitan Jacksonville counties and 3.38 percent statewide, said Steven Manno, a managing director at New York-based Community Counseling Service.

Inaugural scholarships awarded from Bernie G. Yvon Memorial Fund

Two promising performing arts students have received the first college scholarships from a fund honoring Bernie G. Yvon, a beloved Chicago-area actor who passed away in 2014. The scholarships were made possible through the Bernie G. Yvon Memorial Fund, which was established at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida by his parents and supported by contributions of hundreds of friends and colleagues.

Reading programs aim to prevent summer reading loss

The Book Club project costs about $100,000 in all for the backpacks and everything in them, including the books, alphabet cards and bookmark. Private donations from eight sponsors — including the Early Learning Coalition of Duval, the Community Foundation for Northeast Florida and The Chartrand Foundation — pay for The Book Club. The Book Club hopes to increase the number of books next year, as it previously gave each student 12 books. The aim of the club is to keep the children from forgetting what they’ve learned during the school year.

Jacksonville’s first lady, Molly Curry will help the Jacksonville Children’s Commission launch the 2016 JaxKids Book Club by reading a Book Club original book to Pre-K Students at The Salvation Army. The Jacksonville Children’s Commission’s JaxKids Book Club is a free early literacy summer reading program privately funded by local, civic-minded corporations and organizations who value the importance of early literacy and education for our children.

Funders include FPN members The Boeing Company, The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, JM Family Enterprises, Jacksonville Jaguars and The Chartrand Foundation.

Status of Women in Florida by County Project is Launched

TAMPA, Fla. – In response to Florida’s D+ rating on the Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR) 2015 report, the Florida Women's Funding Alliance (FWFA) is commissioning a groundbreaking study of women in Florida by county. FWFA, an affinity group of Florida Philanthropic Network (FPN), will look deeper into key areas – population and diversity, poverty and opportunity, health and well-being, and employment and earnings – to develop actionable policy recommendations to shift that D+ to an A for Florida women.

Anonymous donors give officers opportunity to be #904SecretSanta

Law enforcement officers in Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties put away their citation books to become elves for the day to 500 unsuspecting citizens who received $100 gift cards. Behind the scenes, two anonymous donors approached The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida "to give the men and women who keep our communities safe the opportunity to spread some joy in this holiday season" and help set up a fund to carry out their wishes. From there the foundation worked with the pair, TD Bank and the three Sheriff's Offices to turn the $50,000 donation into the 500 gift cards.
