Building Philanthropy for a Better Florida

Florida Housing Coalition discussion on Opportunity Zones Presentation

Publication date:
July, 2019

This Zoom discussion, hosted in partnership with the Florida Housing Coalition, will discuss the good, bad & ugly of Opportunity Zones. Our discussion will include an overview of Opportunity Zones, their impact on communities, and how funders can be involved. The Opportunity Zones incentive has the potential to attract substantial capital to designated communities across Florida. Created in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Opportunity Zones incentivize private investment in real estate and businesses in 427 designated census tracts, one or more of which lie in every Florida county. While this capital is desperately needed in many communities, the incentive has few guardrails to ensure communities and residents ultimately benefit. In this presentation, the Florida Housing Coalition, Florida’s statewide nonprofit provider of training and technical assistance on affordable housing and community development since 1982, will provide an overview of the incentive and specifically address the important role for Florida’s philanthropic community in Opportunity Zones.
