As the opioid crisis rages on, rural communities are suffering some of the worst damage. Rural places are home to many older people, but their needs, and the many different ways they are affected, are often overlooked. As part of Grantmakers in Aging's rural aging initiative, GIA has released a new paper: Heartache, Pain, and Hope: Rural Communities, Older People, and the Opioid Crisis: An Introduction for Funders, which offers a fresh perspective, broadening the discussion, highlighting the needs and concerns of older adults, and describing proven programs, innovative partnerships, policy recommendations, and scientific and medical responses that governments, communities, nonprofits, and philanthropies can support and expand.
