What is your involvement with Florida Philanthropic Network? What influenced you to join?
"I have been involved with FPN since it merged with the Donor’s Forum of S. Florida in 2012. I remained involved because I believe in the importance of collaboration between government and philanthropy."
Name one thing you find special about the Florida philanthropic community.
"The willingness to work together and to keep looking for ways to be innovative and learn from each other."
Are there any partnerships or collaboration efforts you have found most meaningful to you in the last year?
"I have enjoyed learning about others’ work in the education space through the Education Affinity Group."
What's the biggest challenge you've faced with your philanthropic efforts? How have you overcome them?
"I actually run a government agency not a philanthropic one though we do operate similarly in that we both primarily do our work through the nonprofit agencies. The biggest challenge in supporting nonprofits to do the work centers on staffing. So many of the nonprofits are challenged to find qualified therapists especially who are willing to do in-home services."
What fuels your cup - in life and at work?
"Seeing the impact of our work on so many lives. I’m fortunate to have been in this position for just about 25 years which has allowed me to see children we served grow into incredible adults with families of their own. Some of them struggled with such difficult circumstances growing up and seeing them thrive is inspiring. Closer to home, my family are my foundation. My daughter is now a freshman in college and I love seeing her thrive. I also enjoy singing and my new empty-nester hobby of Mahjong."
Can you share one piece of advice you would give to someone considering a career in philanthropy?
"Philanthropy can be an incredibly fulfilling career, but it is not as easy as it looks if done correctly. Look for ways to work together with other funders to maximize the power of your investments. It is generally not necessary to go it alone. When collaborating, look for how your funding can be used to make the biggest impact."
